Pioneers of France in the New World France and England in North America Part First Francis Parkman 9781354412176 Books
This series of books is one of a kind. Parkman spent his entire adult life from the 1840s to the 1880s researching, writing and rewriting these books. He was fluent in French and he spent years in government archives and private collections and the Jesuit archives in Europe, Québec, New York and Massachusetts. His sources are very carefully documented and he frequently provides the original French in places where he thought that the events he describes are such that his translations might be questioned. He is completely out of favor in the academic world because he is considered to be politically incorrect. Of course, at the time that he lived people were just interested in the truth about history. If you are interested in the truth about the people and their struggles on the North American continent this is where you can find it.
If you are going to read the books on Kindle you will want to avoid the ones with covers that are black on top and green on the bottom. Whoever transferred them to Kindle did a horrible job and they are unreadable. Since they are free you can take a look yourself.
The ones that are cream colored on top and maroon on the bottom are excellent. They are also free.
Each of the books is actually a chapter in his great set of volumes. So you need to read them in the correct order. If you plug in Parkman on the Amazon drop-down under books, the first two are the printed books. The covers of those books are shown and they list the chapters so you can see the order in which you will want to read the Kindle books. Or you can ask me and I will list them for you.
Reading Parkman is a rare adventure. His writing style is sometimes too flowery, I guess you could call it. Some people have criticized it. Since you can read it for free on Kindle you can take a look for yourself. But everything that he writes is taken directly from the records left by the people who saw these events themselves and took part in them. For every event he usually lists multiple sources and gives quotes from the sources which are sometimes in French and sometimes in English depending on the source.
This is the truth. If that is what you want, this is where it is. But sometimes it is gruesome and, to me at least, parts of it were very upsetting. But I wanted to know what really happened. Not what someone else thinks that I should think. Actually, I am reading through the material for the second time right now. I want to know what really happened. If you want some soothing, politically correct, silly little fairy tale, you won't like this.
